About Lori DeBoer

Lori DeBoer is an artist, writer, editor, coach and marketer who lives in Colorado with her family and two parrots. In addition to pursuing her own creative and entrepreneurial endeavors, she enjoys working as a coach and consultant to help others fulfill their personal and professional goals.

Writing

Lori writes in multiple genres, ranging from journalism to fiction. She has been writing professionally since earning her degree in Mass Communications at Buena Vista College in Iowa. She went on to earn her MA in United States History, with an emphasis in rural women’s history, from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She also earned her MFA in creative writing at Arizona State University.  Her writing awards include a Pushcart Prize nomination, a finalist for a Glimmer Train Fiction Open Contest and being shortlisted for the Bellevue Literary Prize, judged by Jane Smiley. She has served as an editor for numerous magazines, including Boulder Magazine and Short Story Writer, and her essays on writing have been published in Mamaphonic: Balancing Motherhood and Other Creative Acts, Keep It Real: Everything You’ve Wanted to Know About Research and Writing Creative Nonfiction and A Million Little Choices: The ABCs of CNF.  She has had more than a thousand articles and essays published in newspapers, magazines and literary journals, including The Bellevue Literary Review, The New York Times, Arizona Highways, Pithead Chapel, Working Woman, America West Airlines Magazine, Black Enterprise, Gloom Cupboard, PHOENIX Magazine and more. She’s taught writing and journalism at several colleges and universities.

Editing and Coaching

Lori has helped hundreds of writers improve their writing and get published. Her client awards have included: Pushcart Prize Nominee; Zebulon Award Winners (5 total); Finalist, Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction; The Glyph Award; First Place, North American Travel Journalists Association; Salon Editor’s Pick; Finalist, Tin House literary award; Finalist, Southwest Writers contest; Colorado Book Award; First Place, Society of Professional Journalists; Third Place, CIPA EVVY Award for Spiritual Writing and more. Her clients have been published in the following general interest magazines and literary magazines: Wend, Women’s Health, 5280, Arizona Highways, Sunset, Men’s Journal, Outside, Backpacker, Go World Travel, Heartlands, The Arizona Republic, The Coachella Review, Runner’s World, Salon and more.

Fine Art & Illustrations

Lori has been working as an artist since high school, where she won “Best of Show” in the school art show and did illustrations for her school and church. In college, she did illustration and graphic design work for the public relations department as well as several journals and magazines.  She returned to the fine art world in 2016, when she started doing book illustrations and pet portraits for clients. Her art has been placed with collectors all over the United States and been exhibited in several group shows in Colorado.  She is known for her sensitive portrayals of animals.  She works in most traditional media, though is particularly fond of casein. She also does digital illustrations on a Huoin tablet using programs like Artrage.

Marketing and Public Relations

Lori has worked in marketing and public relations for nonprofit organizations and small businesses. She did all the marketing for their family business, The French Twist Food Truck, landing numerous stories in regional magazines and a spot for her husband on a Food Network Pilot, “Food Truck Fan Fight.” Her clients have included The Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale, The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, The Center for Great Plains at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and more.  She specializes in white papers, case studies, research, blogs, newsletters, annual reports, e-books, elearning and social media.
