Congratulations to Eddie Lueken, Louisville, Kentucky, whose essay, “Hitting the Bone,” was published in I Wasn’t Strong Like this When I started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse, edited by Lee Gutkind and published by InFact Books in 2013. Eddie, who has an MFA in Creative Writing and is a nurse of more than 30 years, wrote about her years as a student and a nurse-in-training. Her essay was highlighted in a New York Times review of the book, which included a turning point when she was left to make a decision on whether or not to give a breast cancer patient a morphine shot, which might kill her. I first worked with Eddie when I was teaching creative nonfiction at Phoenix College in Arizona; someday I’ll write an essay on how I started as a writing coach and you’ll see how she pushed me in that direction. Eddie is smart and funny and I look forward to being able to share more of her successes.
