I’m so excited to have two of my paintings accepted into the Small Works Showcase at the R Gallery in Boulder. The juried exhibit features pieces 12 inches and smaller. The works I submitted are animal paintings inspired by the designs of William Morris. For those of you not familiar with his designs, he was an influential artist, designer and thinker in England during the Industrial Revolution. I wanted to situate realistic animals within his highly stylized patterns to evoke a feeling of magical realism and nod to his design philosophies and sensibilities. For “Hazel Waits,” I painted a rabbit who appears to be perched in a magical world of his design. “Fox in the Garden” draws more loosely from the designs he used for one of is tapestries.
The show runs from June 1 through July 7, 2019, at the R Gallery, which is located at 2027 Broadway in Boulder, Colorado. The opening reception is on June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.
